Food Storage? I want to know what food storage food has the best taste and the longest shelf life? When in the service we had C rations and later MRE's. Food storage? I am trying to start a year supply of food storage. What are some basics that I should remember to include? It's been suggested to prepare for periods of scarcity or famine and planning for catastrophe or emergency. If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. Call me crazy, but at least I'll be eating good and have other items of need that won't be available at stores.
What should I include in my year food storage? I want to start storing food, my church recommends storage for a year's worth of food. How should I start? What should I include in it? What are the most important things to include so I can get those first? We just moved to a really snowy place and the roads out of town in the winter sometimes get blocked up so I'd like to start this just in case. Also does anyone know what should be included in a 72 hour kit?
Do you have food storage in case of emergency? If so, what things do you store? I'm interested in hearing about foods with almost indefinite storage (eg dried legumes, grains, sugar, etc). What do you store, and how would/do you use it, when you need to live off your food storage? I'm hoping to develop a year's supply of food storage for my family, so the food needs to have a pretty long shelf life. Thanks bocamom. Great ideas! :-) I'm pretty limited in the foods I can buy, as my family are allergic/sensitive to canned meat/fish, tomatoes, onion, spices, honey and other. So far, I have on my list: carob powder (very nutritious, long storage) milk powder white sugar flour dried lentils, beans, chickpeas/garbanzos pasta white rice We can eat cashews (no other nuts) but they have to be raw, and I suspect that they do not store well. I need foods with indefinite storage because my kids won't eat storable foods... unless they are starving. Our diet is very limited to fresh stuff, plus what I have listed. LDS are taught to have and live from a year's supply of food storage (keep rotating). It can guard against things such as loss of employment, economic disaster (eg like the Great Depression) or serve as emergency food for the whole neighborhood in case of a local disaster, eg like New Orleans.
Where can I find commercial food storage containers? I'm trying to find a supplier for what I can best term as "commercial food storage containers". The kind you find in a weight and save shop. The products are all stored in food bins / containers and usually have a hinged lid on the top to reduce contamination. I've been looking with Google and been using various different searches and I keep on finding plenty of small containers for use in the home rather than the type I would use in a shop. Can anyone help point me to a good (UK) company that supply these?
Can you buy food storage items with Food Stamps? Walmart sometimes has long lasting food storage items for sale. Can you buy these with food stamps? I'm talking about the buckets of oats and wheat, cans of dry milk, cans of powdered honey, etc. Has anyone bought these with food stamps? I know the basic what you can and can't buy. I'm not sure about long term food storage items. They last years.
Where can I learn home canning and food storage? I'd like to learn how to do home canning, food dehydrating, etc. in order to preserve food for storage. I know there are a lot of "how to" videos online, but I'd like to find a way to learn in person so that there is less chance of making mistakes given the potential food safety issues. Any suggestions on where I might be able to learn these skills?
Do you have a copy of "The Ultimate Food Storage Cookbook"? I am looking for a copy of the book "The Ultimate Food Storage Cookbook". Can you recommend baby food storage pots for freezing? I freeze my baby's food, but find it very annoying putting them in ice cube trays, as she will eat about 4 or 5 cubes. I want some storage pots that I can fill and put in the freezer instead. I was given some when she was born, and they are great, but she cant remember where they came from! The cheaper the better!

plastic food storage safety question? So, I've read about the plastic storage safety and that plastic w/ the triangle marked 3, 6 or 7 should not be used for food but if it's a 5 (supposedly safe for food) is it ok to store food in the refrigerator, as long as you don't heat food in it?
What pet food storage container is the best? I have tried several different kinds of pet food storage containers and have yet to find one that I like. So far I have tried the stackable storage bins by blitz (http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441781987&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302025790&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1182728312968&itemNo=10&In=Dog&N=2025790&Ne=2) and one by rubbermaid I believe (http://www.petco.com/product/12461/Rubbermaid-Pets-Scoop-n-Store-Pet-Food-Storage.aspx). Neither met my expectations. Within days I had ants galore. Not good. The rubbermaid one looks good but the lid broke and no longer works. Didn't want to pay the money for a new one till I find one with good remarks. The only requirements that I have is that it can hold at least 40 pounds of dog food and be able to keep out unwanted pests.

Can the Government take your food storage? I have heard that there is a federal law that would allow the government to seize any food that is deemed over a two week supply, from any home excluding home canned goods during a crisis. Is this true? Where could I read up on it?
Do plastics in food storage containers absorb dish detergent? Anytime I microwave food in a plastic container or glass container with a plastic lid...there is this hint of chemical flavor? My theory is the detegent used for dish washing is absorbed into these plastics and when heated, are discipated into the food. Maybe I over think these things.

Looking for BPA free dog food storage containers and water bottles? I'm reposting this question: I'm using an Iris storage container currently and it's the perfect size. 12 QT I think. I'm not convinced it's BPA free. I haven't seen anything on 'net confirming they have BPA, but nothing disproving it either. Suggestions? sorry - just to make it clear, I mean a water bottle for dogs, not for humans, i.e. one they can easily drink out of on walks on hot days.
