Does Vacuum packing down/feather jackets ruin the feathers? I am shipping things overseas in a few weeks and would like to vacuum pack my down jacket to save space. Will putting my jacket in a vacuum bag and sucking the air out of it ruin the feathers in the jacket? It will be in the bag for about 6 weeks, after which I will take it out and store it hanging. I've read around and a few places say that you shouldn't reduce the size of down things by more than 50% Who know's what?
Could mass Vacuum packing of liquids have an effect on Global Warming? Is water not removed from the water cycle when it is sealed in bottles, jars, etc? If so, I would have thought that by sealing water from the environment, its cooling effects in the atmosphere are also removed- especially at the rate our society uses vacuum packing! Do we require a breathable way of storing liquids?
seed savers - does vacuum packing your seeds make them keep longer? I bought a big pack of corn seed this year & only used 1/3 of it. I am wondering if using a home vacuum packer (like a food saver) will help the corn seed last longer, since corn seed doesn't keep very well. I'd love to use this for my pepper seeds, also, since they dont' seem to keep that well, either. Or is it better to use an oxygen absorbing compound? thx!!
How (or where) can I re-vacuum pack my memory foam mattress? I am planning a cross-country move, and have a 14'' think queen sized memory foam mattress. When it was shipped to me it came vacuum sealed and rolled up like a rug I don't need it to be as small as it was when it came, but I need a few more inches to fit in my SUV. I'm open to all suggestions- not just vacuum packing. Any ideas??
Where can I get an item vacuum packed? I have a memory foam mattress topper that was vacuum packed in its original box, and when I took it out originally, it expanded to many, many times its original vacuum packed size. I live far away and need to ship it to myself now, but now that it's not vacuum packed and shrunk, I can't get it much smaller than the largest of my suitcases. Is there any place that I can go to get it industrially shrink wrapped or vacuum packed (preferably in the DFW area) so that I can get it down to at least a fraction of its original size? The home vacuum sealers won't do the trick; this mattress pad is much too strong and large for what they are intended to do. I've tried and nothing works, I'm thinking only an industrial stength vacuum packer will work.
how can I vacuum pack a mattress? My parents live abroad and they have a memory foam mattress that they leave at my place to sleep on when they are here. But I have no way of storing it when they are not here. It can vacuum packed in a small bag but I don't have that anymore. Any suggestions?
How do you open vacuum packed pate? im in the kitchen right now, trying to figure out how the heel i open my smooth brussels pate! its vacuum packed in like a bag and how can i open it without gettin it everywhere :(
Can I use my "foodsaver" vacuum packer to make Pickles? I figure I can pre-make the pickling liquid, then just add it to the cucumbers and vacuum pack them in my mason jars. Will I need to adjust the recipe? I think the whole purpose of boiling the jars with everything in them is only to create the vacuum seal on the jars. Obviously it is still important to sterilize the jars right before use. And I plan to brine the cucumbers 24 hours before vacuum packing.
How can you tell if beef jerky is no longer good? We have some in a sealed (vacuum) pack.? This is Amish made beef jerky that has never been opened. It smells great, tastes good - it looks really dry and has some sort of sparkle to it? The only thing really is that it looks dry. There is no mold or anything like that but we are just wanting to find anything to help us figure it out. Please no smart alec answers... we really are trying to figure this out. Thank you to everyone who tries to help!
My vacuum packed potato will not cook. Why? It's raw pieces vacuum packed in a 5kg catering pack. I took some out, and boiled it in water for 40 mins, but most of it is STILL raw. Am I missing something? Thanks, guys. I tried yesyou's suggestion and soaked some for 2 hours, but they still won't cook. So I'm taking Sugar pie's line and putting the rest in the compost. Cheers....Andy
Can you freeze canned tuna after opening it, if you package it vacuum seal pack? My question is, if I purchase a large commercial can of tuna, drain and rinse it well, can I vacuum seal portions in small serving sizes and freeze them for later use to make tuna salad sandwiches? My grandfather is on a renal diet, and he is instructed by his doctor to eat lots of tuna. We open a can, rinse it, and prepare it with mayo and vegetables. I can buy large commercial cans, like 48 ounces, much cheaper than individual 6 or 12 ounce cans.
What's the best Vacuum cleaner model for cat hairs? Hi, just got myself a lovely fluffy kitty and my Dyson vacuum cleaner packed in, so need to buy new one - just wondering with all that kitty experience out there which is the best cleaner for lifting hairs - don't mind if it is upright or cylinder, but prefer uprights.
High altitude effects on pretzel bags and vacuum packs in general? On a trip to the Grand Canyon I noticed that pretzel bags, yogurt bottles and everything that is vacuum packed tended to swell due to the lower air pressure outside. I did not see that products sold in the area had this effect, and I was wondering - do the companies produce the product with different internal pressure depending on the destination it is sold? That sounds too expensive. There was no change in the swelling of my pretzel bags after a week in high altitude, so I don't think the pressure equalizes after a while - at least not a short while. I don't think it's economically feasible to do the packaging there. I have just received an answer suggesting that the products are packaged locally. Vacuum-packed frozen fish defrosted a week ago? So I have some frozen tilapia that are individually vacuum packed and I thawed one in warm water (still packaged) and then decided to go out to eat that night, and put it in the fridge. Is it okay to eat since it's vacuum packed, or should I still stick to the normal rule of 2 days?
